My journey through the Master’s in Instructional Design and Development program has been a pivotal chapter in my professional life. Driven by a passion for creating impactful learning experiences, I embarked on this academic adventure to deepen my understanding and hone my skills in instructional design.

The program immersed me in various theories and models pivotal to instructional design, including ADDIE, SAM, ARCs, and Gagne’s Nine Events. Through rigorous coursework and hands-on projects, I developed a nuanced understanding of how to effectively align learning objectives with instructional strategies, ensuring that every educational intervention is purposeful and impactful. Between the first year and second year, I began to shift my mindset from that of informational design and learning design.

Collaborative projects simulated real-world instructional design challenges. Leading a project that developed a blended learning curriculum for remote learners, I applied the SAM model to iteratively design and refine our instructional materials, incorporating feedback loops that enhanced the effectiveness and accessibility of the learning experience. I’m currently applying the AGILE methodology for program development and implementation. These are skills built in the University of Alabama at Birmingham’s MS IDD program.

The program was not just a journey of academic and professional growth but also one of personal transformation. It cultivated in me a more profound sense of empathy for learners’ diverse needs and backgrounds, sharpening my ability to create inclusive learning environments. Leadership opportunities within team projects further honed my collaboration and project management skills, preparing me for complex instructional design challenges.

Armed with the knowledge and skills acquired from the Master’s program, I am more committed than ever to advancing the field of instructional design. I am particularly eager to explore the potential of emerging technologies in creating immersive and adaptive learning experiences. As I move forward in my career, I am motivated by the endless possibilities to innovate and make a lasting impact in the world of education.
